BEFRIENDING IN MAIDEN NEWTON AND CATTISTOCK
The Maiden Newton Befriending Scheme... doing the small things that make a big difference
Many older people in Dorset are currently enjoying the benefits of WRVS community-based volunteer befriending schemes. WRVS is now working with the Maiden Newton surgery to establish such a service in Maiden Newton and Cattistock and the surrounding villages and hamlets.
WRVS volunteers are local and offer their time on a regular basis to help older people to remain independent and active in their community. They do this in many ways – shopping, accompanied walks, walking the dog, reading, playing cards & board games, sitting to relieve a carer and, most importantly, just visiting & chatting over a cup of tea.
New volunteers are always welcome to join WRVS. Each area has its own coordinator who will meet with you to talk about the type of work you would most enjoy and then introduce you to a person who will benefit from your company & support.
As a member of our team, you will be fully supported by a local coordinator, receive induction and other relevant training.
We are actively seeking new volunteers who are willing to give a small part of their week to help older people remain independent, doing the things they enjoy.
We would also like to meet volunteers who are interested in training to be a co-ordinator in this exciting new scheme. The coordinator is supported and mentored by a line manager. The coordinator is also part of a network of coordinators across Dorset. This network provides additional support, facilitates sharing best practice and assisting with problem solving.
The benefits to both volunteers and those using the service are numerous and rewarding;
-
You meet new people
-
You learn new things about others and the area in which you live
-
People retain their independence and self-esteem
-
Volunteers experience a feeling of contributing to an invaluable service and of making a real difference to the life of someone else.
